What is an Ultrasound?
An ultrasound (also called a sonogram) is a safe and painless diagnostic test that allows doctors to see what is happening inside your body in real-time.
Unlike X-rays, an ultrasound does not use radiation. Instead, it uses high-frequency sound waves—similar to how a sonar works—to create clean, detailed images of your organs, tissues, and blood vessels.
How Does It Work?
The process is very simple, quick, and comfortable:
The Gel: A certified technician applies a small amount of warm gel to your skin. This helps the sound waves travel smoothly.
The Device: The technician gently moves a small handheld device (called a transducer) over the area.
The Image: This device sends safe sound waves into your body, which bounce back as echoes. A computer instantly turns those echoes into live photos and videos on a screen.
General Ultrasound Modalities
Abdominal Ultrasound (Complete)
What it examines: Liver, gallbladder, kidneys, pancreas, spleen, and the abdominal aorta.
Common uses: To investigate abdominal pain, bloating, abnormal liver function tests, gallstones, or kidney stones.
Limited Abdominal Ultrasound
What it examines: Focused evaluation of one or two specific organs in the abdomen (for example, just the gallbladder or just the kidneys).
Common uses: Used for quick follow-ups on known issues without scanning the entire abdomen.
Renal & Urinary Tract Ultrasound
What it examines: Kidneys, ureters, and the urinary bladder.
Common uses: To check for kidney stones, urinary tract infections (UTIs), tumors, or causes of blood in the urine.
Pelvic Ultrasound (Non-OB)
What it examines: The lower abdomen/pelvis area. In women, it looks at the uterus and ovaries; in men, it looks at the bladder and prostate.
Common uses: To evaluate pelvic pain, irregular bleeding, fibroids, or ovarian cysts.
Transvaginal / Transrectal Ultrasound
What it examines: Internal pelvic organs using a specialized, slim probe.
Common uses: Provides high-resolution, close-up images to evaluate early pregnancy, ovarian cysts, or the uterine lining with greater detail than a surface scan.
Thyroid & Neck Ultrasound
What it examines: The thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, and lymph nodes in the neck.
Common uses: To investigate lumps felt in the neck, follow up on thyroid nodules, or evaluate difficulty swallowing.
Scrotal & Testicular Ultrasound
What it examines: The testicles, epididymis, and scrotum.
Common uses: To evaluate testicular pain, swelling, lumps, fluid accumulation (hydrocele), or varicocele.
Breast Ultrasound
What it examines: Breast tissue and surrounding lymph nodes.
Common uses: Often used to investigate a lump found during a physical exam or to further evaluate an abnormal finding on a mammogram.
Superficial / Small Parts Ultrasound
What it examines: Soft tissues, skin layers, or palpable lumps anywhere on the body (like lipomas, sebaceous cysts, or fluid collections).
Common uses: To determine if a lump right under the skin is solid, fluid-filled, or requires further medical attention.
What is it Used For?
Ultrasound is an incredibly versatile tool that helps your doctor monitor your health and provide accurate diagnoses:
Pregnancy & OB/GYN: To check on your baby’s development, growth, and heartbeat month by month.
Organ Checkups: To examine the liver, kidneys, gallbladder, spleen, and thyroid for any abnormalities.
Blood Flow (Doppler): To make sure blood is flowing correctly through your veins and arteries, helping to detect clots or blockages.
Why Patients Love It:
It doesn’t hurt, it takes just a few minutes, and it gives your doctor the exact answers needed to take care of you.
