This test is commonly performed to detect an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) — a dangerous enlargement or bulging of the aorta that can lead to life-threatening complications if not found early.
Why Is This Exam Important?
An abdominal aortic aneurysm often develops slowly and without symptoms. Many people don’t realize they have one until it becomes large or ruptures, which can be life-threatening.
Early detection through an abdominal aortic ultrasound allows doctors to monitor the condition or take preventive measures before it becomes serious.
You may need this ultrasound if you:

How Is the Procedure Performed?
The ultrasound is quick, safe, and completely painless. During the exam:
You’ll lie comfortably on a table.
A clear gel will be applied to your abdomen.
The sonographer will move a small probe (transducer) over your skin to capture images of the aorta.
The test usually takes about 15 to 20 minutes and does not require recovery time.
There is no radiation, and most patients can eat and drink normally before the test — unless your provider gives specific instructions.
Understanding the Results
If the ultrasound shows that the aorta is normal, no further testing may be needed.
If an aneurysm or dilation is detected, your healthcare provider will discuss the next steps, which may include monitoring the size over time or referring you to a vascular specialist.
